How To Install Chrome OS on PC

FULL... but really, really FULL GUIDE

The idea of this page is simple. On my YouTube channel, I have over 20 videos (so far) about Chrome OS. From the basic (old method) how to install Chrome OS on a PC or laptop with Linux Mint, how to make a bootable USB with Ubuntu, dual boot with Windows 10 and 11 (old and new method), directly from USB... how to fix it... how to update... and so on and on and on.

Basically a video for every issue (or method of installation) that I could think of. The only problem is that they are not in a specific order... from the point of view of someone who tries Chrome OS for the first time and doesn't know how to start and what to do.

And this is what I want to "FIX" here. I will go over all my videos and make a "guide" of sorts, what video should be watched first, second, and so on.

One VERY IMPORTANT thing I would like to STRESS OUT (even if I mention this in every Chrome OS video), make sure your CPU is compatible with Chrome OS - Make sure the recovery image you are planning on using/downloading it's a match for your CPU - do not attempt installing an incompatible image just because you think "it might work".

That being said... Let's Start!

Note: Because after version 94 things have changed - the installation method, how to make a Chrome OS .img file, how to dual boot with Windows - I will not go over some of the older videos from my channel (such as the videos in the row below).

Don't get me wrong, these are still 100% functional methods, and if you have an older system and nothing else works you can give them a try. Consider them as a "last stand" in the battle with Chrome OS:) But if you can avoid them, do so because the newer methods are faster and less complicated.

Step 1: Is your device compatible with Chrome OS?

Why you CAN'T install Chrome OS on your PC should be the FIRST VIDEO to check out before trying to Install Chrome OS on PC. Here you'll learn how to check out if your CPU is compatible with Chrome OS, and if it is, which is the right Chrome OS recovery image for it.

Rammus, Samus, Volteer, Grunt, and Zork are not the only recovery images out there. There are some Celeron, Atom, and even a few Pentium processors compatible with Chrome OS, and they need other types of recovery images. Check the video out for more details.

Step 2: How to make a Chrome OS recovery image (.img)?

So now you have figured it out that your CPU is compatible with Chrome OS and you have the right recovery image (.bin) with the matching Brunch file.

If you are lucky and you have an Intel CPU between 3rd and 11th gen (12th gen may also be compatible), or AMD Stoney Ridge, Bristol Ridge, Ryzen 3xxx or higher, you can download DONE - ready to use - Chrome OS recovery images from here.

If that's not the case, and you have to make it on your own, then this video is the right one for you!

Step 3: Direct Install or Dual Boot

Now that the Chrome OS recovery image (.img) is ready, you can simply flash it on USB (minimum 16 GB) using Rufus , and install it on your device following the instructions from the left video (Install Chrome OS from USB). This method does not require Linux Mint and is ideal for a fast and easy installation.

Warning: This type of installation will wipe out all data from the drive. You CANNOT install it on a certain partition. If you want Chrome OS on a partition, then you need to make a dual boot system by following the instructions from the right video (Dual Boot Chrome OS and Windows 11/10 NEW METHOD).

EXTRA: Chrome OS on Legacy BIOS / MBR devices

Let's not forget about the older, Legacy / MBR PC's and laptops out there. If they have a compatible CPU, they can have Chrome OS as well. Step 4: How to FIX Chrome OS

If your hardware is not compatible with Chrome OS, then these fixes will not work (and NO, you CAN''T install drivers on Chrome OS). Another thing that you need to know is that adapters usually don't work with Chrome OS either. For example, if you have a Wi-Fi adapter, you'll most probably need to use Ethernet.

Step 5: How Update Chrome OS

The final step of the journey: How to Update Chrome OS. Now that Chrome OS is installed and fixed and everything is running smoothly, there's still one last matter that needs to be dealt with.

If you try updating Chrome OS the normal way, from settings, you'll see that it will not work. So in this video I'll share with you three ways of updating Chrome OS and talk a little bit about their pros and cons.

In the end, it's up to you which of the 3 methods you'll choose to update your Chrome OS.

I say "for now" because nobody knows what Chrome OS will bring in the future, and how this will change the current way of installation. But, no matter what, be sure that if this happens, you will find the solutions in my videos.

One last important thing: It seems that this is something that I always forget to mention in my videos (and by the way it looks, I almost forgot to mention it here as well): Chrome OS and ultra low voltage CPUs (ULV).

The way it seems, Chrome OS cannot be installed on devices with ULV CPUs. You can find out if you have this type of processor by simply checking the name. If it has the letter "U" at the end (ex: i3-5005U or i5-6300u), then you have a ULV CPU and most probably you CAN'T install Chrome OS on it. But you can run Chrome OS from a USB as a live CD. So, there's at least that.
